Many race car engines begin their life in a street vehicle. From humble beginnings, the search begins to build power and go racing. Through modification, after modification, the quest to achieve a strong reliable race engine must involve choosing the right engine oil for your specific application. Below is a guide to selecting the right oil for your race engine. Begin with the original oil viscosity recommendation as per a standard factory engine and then adjust based upon how mild, or wild, you get with your modifications in the search for power.

What is Poly Alpha Olefin (PAO) ?

Poly Alpha Olefin or PAO is a 100% synthetic base oil stock used in the production of high performance lubricants. PAO’s typically have a higher viscosity index than mineral oils and better oxidative stability- i.e.they are less likely to breakdown.

What does Group IV and Group V base oils mean?

All engine lubricants start life as a base oil and fall into either Group I, II, III, IV or V base oils.  Group I and II base stocks are typically ‘less refined’ and form the basis of Mineral or semi synthetic base oils.

Group III base oils are widely considered to be synthetic while group IV an group V base oils are 100% fully synthetic and offer the highest level of lubricant protection and performance. Nulon Racing oil is blended using group IV and group V base oils.

What is Alkylated Naphthalene (AN)?

AN (Alkylated Naphthalene) is a 100% synthetic base oil stock well suited for lubricants in a variety of automotive and industrial applications. AN is particularly suited for use as a base stock in synthetic lubricant applications that require high stability under extreme operating conditions.

What are the benefits of AN over conventional base oils?

There are a number of important performance characteristics AN have over other base oils and these include:

  • Increased thermal and oxidative stability
  • Increased hydrolytic stability. AN does not attract water like ester based oils making it ideal for vehicles running E85 or other high performance fuels.
  • Excellent additive solvency.
  • Excellent seal compatibility.
  • AN is less polar versus ester, therefore will not compete with additive for metal surface attention.
